I am applying for a credit card and they want to know my work number. Will they call my work to talk to me or just see if i actually do work there?

They are looking for additional contact info in case you default.

The major issuers typically do not call to confirm employment. However, it’s known to sometimes happen (rarely)… presumably when there is credit report info that gives them cause to want to do a little extra "due diligence" in confirming your application information. (I suspect this is true more of small lenders.)

I have never in 30 years had a credit card company call and verify my employment.

They use that number in case you become late or default on your card.
